Today issue one of the new “Jem and the Holograms” comic came out from IDW. Personally I have been waiting for this comic to come out since I first heard they were doing it, for no other reason than nostalgia.
This first issue starts the arc that is sub-titled “Showtime.” Jerrica and her sisters are trying to film a music video to join a contest. However Jerrica has extreme stage fright and cannot film the music video because of the other people in the building that are helping with the shoot.
After Jerrica freaks out about not being able to do the shoot she runs home crying. While she is in the home studio a storm reboots a computer system that has a 3d holographic person named Synergy attached to it.
Synergy explains to Jerrica who she is and gives her a pair of earrings her father had intended to give her before he died. Kimber, Shana, and Aja show up at the house and together the four of them and Synergy go into a hidden room their father had built that housed Synergy. Synergy shows them the power of her holograms and then Jerrica sets it up to change her appearance so it will hopefully help her get rid of the stage fright. And that is how Jem is born.
This issue is a nicely paced origin type story of how Jem is created. The artwork is nice though it did take a while for me to get used to since when I think Jem and the Holograms I remember the 80’s versions.
Overall I think this is a good book to introduce your kids to comic books. Or if you are a fan of Jem and the Holograms check it out, and if you want a since of nostalgia check out the variant covers which feature solo images of the Holograms and Jem, with the look they had in the cartoon.
