‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ – Review

City of Bones

“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” is a movie based on the book by Cassandra Clare. It is about a teenager named Clary, played by Lily Collins, who starts drawing a weird symbol . Her mother Jocelyn, played by Lena Heady, notices it and even though she knows what it means hesitates to tell Clary despite being urged to do so by her friend Luke, played by Aidan Turner.

While Clary is out with her best friend Simon, played by Robert Sheehan, one night she sees a murder in a night club that no one else can see. The next day she again goes out with Simon to a coffee shop and sees the guy who murdered someone at the club and follows him outside. She finds out the guys name is Jace, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, and that he is a Shadowhunter and the guy he killed the night before was a demon. While Clary is talking to Jace she receives a call from her mother who is being attacked at their home by two men and she tells Clary not to come home but to go find Luke.

In typical teenager fashion Clary does not listen to Jocelyn and runs home instead to find her mother missing and their apartment ransacked. Jace shows up while Clary is running from a demon and helps her. The two of them and Simon head to Luke’s store for help. While Simon stands guard Jace and Clary go in to find Luke being beat up by the two guys that had trashed the apartment looking for information about the Mortal Cup which Jocelyn had hidden.

While hiding behind a bookcase watching the two guys beat on Luke she overhears him say he was just hanging out with Jocelyn and Clary so he himself could get his hands on the cup. The words sting Clary a bit so she and Jace runaway after being found by the two men. As the escape the store Jace kills two demons that were masquerading as cops, which Simon freaks out about not knowing anything yet about the demons. The three of them then go to the Institute.

The rest of the movie follows Jace, Clary, and Simon along with their friends Alec (played by Kevin Zegers) and Isabelle (played by Jemima West) go in search of the Mortal Cup and Jocelyn.

The movie is okay and I enjoyed it. But I am a fan of Lena Heady’s work in “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and Jamie Campbell Bower’s work in “Camelot” which was the reason I checked out the movie. I have not read the books but heard it deviates from them a little. But regardless I would say if you want to see this rent it first before dropping the cash to buy it, just in case because it is not a movie for everyone.
