Top Ten Musicals

On stage or screen musicals allow the watcher to suspend belief and pretend that there is a world where it is normal for people to break out in song, expressing their emotions and ideas. The list below are, in my opinion, the ten best musicals you can see on stage and/or screen.

10. RENT
I have not seen the new run they are doing for RENT on Broadway but both the movie and the final performance from the first run on Broadway, which ended in 2008 (and can be found on DVD or Youtube). This is an excellent story and whatever version you watch, film or Broadway, you will not be disappointed.

9. The Book of Mormon
I just recently saw this musical a little while ago. It tells the story of two Mormon missionaries in Uganda. It is a story not everyone will enjoy because of the subject matter but I urge anyone who has a chance to see this to check it out.

8. The Lion King
This animated film from Walt Disney came out while I was in high school and is no doubt one of my favorite Disney films so far.

7. Repo! The Genetic Opera
A film about a dystopian future where a big corporation makes the rules for citizens. They eventually get it to be legal that body parts can get repossessed if payments are not made.

6. West Side Story
A retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in the 1950’s with two feuding gangs instead of two families.

5. Spring Awakening
The story of teenagers in a town learning about sexuality.

4. Sweeney Todd
The story of Benjamin Barker, the demon barber on Fleet Street.

3. Wicked
The musical adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.”

2. Grease
The story of Danny Zuko and Sandy as they navigate a year of high school in different cliques.

1.Wizard of Oz
The story of a young girl from Kansas in a strange land. A timeless classic that holds a special place in the hearts of most everyone.

And of course an honorable mention to the Mel Brooks film “The Producers.”

Do you agree with the choices in this Top Ten? Let us know in the comments below, and tell us some of your favorite musicals on stage or screen.

  • I have enjoyed all of these shows you mentioned. But for me the best musical is hands down “West Side Story.”
